Average Tune-Up Costs
Typically performed once per year, a tune-up is simply a regularly scheduled preventative maintenance routine on a vehicle. The tune-up process will certainly differ based on the age, make, model and mileage of a vehicle. A tune-up will generally consist of an air filter replacement, computer diagnostics check and an inspection of the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter and other basic vehicle components.
For a minimal tune-up, costs should start between $40-$150. This service includes checking spark plugs and wires, replacing them if necessary. Costing between $200-$800, standard tune-ups include replacing the rotor, spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter and PVC valve. Additionally, you can expect the service to include an oil change, check of computer diagnostics, fuel, ignition and emission systems. The total cost will depend on which parts are needed to complete the job. Manual labor will also be factored in, ranging between $40-$150 per hour.
A standard tune-up comes with an average cost of $340. Older vehicles, though, will see higher costs for tune-ups. A 90,000, 100,000 or 120,000-mile tune-up could cost up to $1,200.
What Is Included In A Tune-Up?
Your first step is to check the owner’s manual for year, make and model. This will provide you with what maintenance needs to be carried out on your specific vehicle. Based on mileage and age, each vehicle has a schedule of suggested and required maintenance needs.
A typical tune-up should last between 2-4 hours total. Most modern vehicles use platinum spark plugs that can last up to 100,000 miles. Newer vehicles will also come with an electronic ignition system rather than a distributor, meaning a tune-up will not include a new rotor and distributor cap.
There are a few signs that a tune-up is needed. For example, a decrease in gas mileage, loss of power, engine knocking and a check engine light staying on are all signs you need a tune-up. Yes, these symptoms could be caused by other issues within the vehicle, as well. Most mechanics will begin with a diagnostics test before figuring out if a tune-up is called for.
