Transmission flushes are the process to remove old automatic transmission fluid (ATF), grime and sludge from a vehicle’s transmission and exchange it with new fluid.
The intention of ATF is to cool and lubricate your vehicles transmission. After a while, transmission fluid gathers foreign pollutants that can interrupt these operations — causing your transmission to produce more resistance and heat. Eventually these pollutants build up into sludge debris in your transmission and interrupts with shifting and acceleration.
What is a transmission flush useful for?
A transmission flush helps optimize the longevity and performance of your automatic transmission – among the costliest vehicle parts to replace. Nevertheless, it is not going to help with pre-existing transmission problems.
Is a transmission flush the same thing as replacing transmission fluid?
Changing transmission fluid and flushing the transmission are 2 different services:
Transmission Fluid Change – Replaces fifty to sixty percent of your transmission’s fluid. The pan of your transmission is drained without specialized tools, examined, and cleaned. The transmission filter is exchanged, and new fluid is replenished, leaving a blend of new and old transmission fluid.
Transmission Flush – Replaces one hundred percent of your transmission fluid and removes amassed pollutants and deposits from the whole transmission. Fluid is removed from your transmission by way of a cooler line flushing device or an inlet pump. The transmission pan is examined and cleaned; new filter installed. A complete quantity of new, purified ATF is added.
How frequently should I have my transmission flushed?
Go through your vehicle owner’s manual to see how frequently your vehicle manufacturer recommends a transmission flush for your make and model. Typical transmission flush periods range from every thirty thousand to fifty thousand miles to every three to five years.
How frequently should I replace my transmission fluid?
If you are not having total transmission flushes, a typical ATF change period is every three thousand miles or every two years. Once more, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
